ISB holds the distinction of being Thailand's first international school, opening in 1951 as the International Children's Center on the grounds of the US Embassy, serving an initial group of just 50 children from UN and embassy families. That history helps explain why the school still carries an unusually international, diplomatic-community feel even today.
The campus occupies roughly 37 acres inside Nichada Thani, a gated residential community in Nonthaburi built specifically around the school. Many ISB families choose to live inside or near Nichada Thani itself, since it removes the cross-town commute that affects families at more centrally located schools, at the cost of being further from downtown Bangkok on weekends.
Academically, ISB runs an American curriculum through Advanced Placement courses, with the IB Diploma Programme also available as an option in the final two years, giving families a choice between the two most internationally recognized university pathways. ISB was the first school in Thailand to offer the IB Diploma at all, alongside its American track.
With around 1,900 students, ISB is large enough to field a full IASAS athletics and arts program, and its extensive campus includes facilities that go well beyond a typical school day, more in line with a small American high school and college campus combined.
